Crawl Space Insulation Alberta

Crawl Space Insulation Alberta

Cold Floors, Frozen Pipes, a Musty Smell From Below?

A crawl space is part of the house whether anyone treats it that way or not. When it's cold and damp, the floors above are cold, pipes and drains freeze in a cold snap, and the musty air works its way up into the living space. The usual fix — fiberglass batts stapled between the floor joists — rarely lasts long in an Alberta crawl space. The batts sag, collect moisture, become a home for mice, and end up on the ground.

Why Crawl Space Insulation Fails

Crawl spaces are hard on insulation. These are the problems behind most of the failed installs we pull out:

  • Moisture from bare or poorly covered soil soaking into the insulation
  • Batts between the joists sagging and falling away from the subfloor
  • Rim joists left uninsulated and unsealed — the biggest draft in the space
  • Open vents and gappy skirting pulling outdoor air straight under the floor
  • Pipes and ducts left outside the insulated area, so they freeze or lose heat
  • Rodent damage and nesting in loose insulation

How We Insulate a Crawl Space

1

Inspection

We go in and look at moisture, the soil cover, the structure, the existing insulation, vents, pipes and ducts. If there is rot, sagging or water coming in, that is fixed before anything is insulated.

2

Ground Cover & Moisture Control

A heavy vapour barrier on the ground, lapped and sealed, so soil moisture stays out of the space and out of the new insulation.

3

Seal and Insulate the Rim Joist

Rigid foam cut to fit and sealed at the rim — where most of the cold and the drafts get in.

4

Insulate the Walls or the Floor

Where the space allows, we insulate the perimeter walls so the whole crawl space, pipes included, stays above freezing. Where that doesn’t suit the building, we insulate and properly support insulation at the floor.

5

Vents, Access and Skirting

Vents dealt with to suit the approach, the access hatch sealed and insulated, and skirting insulated on homes and cabins on posts.
